Barney McEnroe, age 94, of Broomall, PA, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2019.

Born in Kill, Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland, Barney immigrated to America in 1949 seeking work here in the United States and was welcomed into his aunt's West Philadelphia home.

Barney will be remembered fondly for his devoted work with the Cavan Society, where he served in many capacities as well as past president.

He also worked with the GAA

Gaelic Athletic Association

-

which promotes traditional Irish sports including Hurling, Gaelic Football and ladies Camogie.

In 1971, Barney started the first Irish women's Philadelphia Cavan Camogie Team, which went on to win many championships both here and abroad in Ireland.

Barney's Irish heritage runs deep and is realized by the many ways he worked to support and encourage Irish immigrants and Irish Americans in his local community.

From being part of the Commodore Barry Club/Irish Center which focuses on keeping the Irish arts and culture alive and vibrant, to being part of the Irish Immigration Center of Philadelphia, which acts as a cornerstone for Irish immigrants and the Irish communities alike.

Barney served as part of the 1951 committee that founded the Philadelphia St. Patrick's Day Parade and was very active in both the Philadelphia and Springfield St. Patrick's Day Parades for many years. He also was an original committee member of the Holy Rosary Sister's Missions for over 30+ years.

Barney was the co-owner and co-founder of Cavan Construction Company.

He was an avid and competitive golfer and enjoyed playing at Paxon Hollow Country Club, as well as bowling and was a great Phillies fan!

Barney especially savored his trips to his homeland in Ireland as well as vacationing in Florida.

Barney was the beloved husband of the late Teresa (nee Connell) McEnroe; the loving father of Eileen McGinty (Jimmy) and the late Marie Farrelly (the late Philip); the devoted grandfather of Kevin and Michael McGinty, Keara Farrelly (Esteban) and the late Declan Farrelly; and great-grandfather of Theo and Lewis.

He was the dear brother of Edward McEnroe (Eileen), Bridie Joy (Bill), Rose Traynor (the late Phil) and Eileen Shalvey (the late Phelim).
